This exhibit features 26 artists including our Connie Sanders, whose work captures those moments when wonder and awe drive away daily cares, when life as we know it collides with the beauty, power, and mystery of the Universe. The exhibit will consist of approximately 40 pieces, two are 3-D art pieces, two photographs and the rest are paintings -pastels, watercolors, etc. Prizes are being awarded to the best in this juried show, as judged by Ann Glasscock, Ph.D., assistant curator of the Taft Museum of Art.

Spring Grove was chartered in 1845, and is one of the largest nonprofit cemeteries in the United States, and the most beautiful according to thousands of visitors who come to visit every year. There are 733 acres of which approximately 450 acres are developed. The lakes provide an excellent reflection of the bursting colors. The show creates a captivating environment filled with 12,000 butterflies in free flight for visitors of all ages to enjoy. Visitors will also encounter a bit of Ecuador, referred to as “four worlds in one,” represented by different climate zones: Amazons, Andes, Coast and the Galapagos Islands.”

TOPIC: CITY SCAPES OUR CRITIQUE: STEVEN AND SUZANNE BARGER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM: Steve will take us through his normal workflow in RAW (Light Room), then discuss some additional steps including: selections, layer masking and blends. BIO: This past year Steven and Suzanne had two images selected into National Association of Nature Photographer’s (NANPA) top 100 collection, and one image was accepted by the Professional Photographer’s Association (PPA) into their Loan Collection. Steven and Suzanne Barger enjoy capturing city scapes, more so at night. They have been seriously photographing for about 30 years. They have been to Svalbard Norway, Iceland, Namibia, South Africa, Tanzania, several places in Canada and to numerous regions in the US to photograph nature. They have co-led several photo tours and workshops in Alaska, Hocking Hills in SE Ohio, the Smoky Mountains, Yellowstone National Park and Colorado. Steve also co-presented a seminar at the New England Council of Camera Clubs. Their photographs have been used in several books and web sites. One image was selected for the cover of the book, Caribou and the North: A Shared Legacy. Steve has had several images featured in NANPA’s Showcase of Images, and has had displays in several galleries throughout the US. Both Suzanne and Steve have been active with the annual Shoot the Hill’s photo competition held in Hocking Hills State Park for many years. Most recently, they have been to Svalbard Norway. • What we’ll do The Montgomery Arts Commission will host Exposure: Montgomery, the City’s 32nd annual photo competition, on Sunday, April 14, from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the historic Universalist Church, located on the corner of Montgomery and Remington Roads. In addition to the exhibit and awards presentation, the public is invited to a “sneak peek” reception on Saturday, April 13, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Universalist Church.
The competition, open to beginners and serious amateurs alike, is the longest-running photo contest in the region. Judging is based on photos that capture technical brilliance, originality or a unique point of view, and are chosen from both adult and student categories. Up to 10 winners in each category will be awarded $100 each. Winning photos will be publicly displayed at Christ Hospital after the competition from April 20-May 17.
The judges this year included Liz Dufour (Cincinnati Enquirer photo-journalist), Emily Bauman (Curatorial Assistant, Cincinnati Art Museum), and Emily Momohara (Associate Professor, Cincinnati Art Academy).
Photographers may submit up to three photos March 1st through April 1st to Montgomery City Hall from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Entry fee is $10 per photo for adults, and $5 per photo for students of high school age and below. Entry requirements, including information on how to properly mount photos for display, are below. • What to bring Typically small bottles of water and snacks are available for free (small donation accepted). Bring a smile and review the photos before the awards are announced.
• Important to know You need to submit your prints by April 1 at the Montgomery City Hall located at 10101 Montgomery Road. There are rules for submitting images you must obey per the ENTRY INFORMATION following. There is public parking behind the historic church within a block or two.
ENTRY INFORMATION • Each entry must be an original photograph of the competitor’s own creation. • Entries must be in a photographic medium: black and white, color or experimental. • Each entry must be securely mounted on a stiff backing suitable for hanging. • Matting is required for a photograph to be exhibited. Un-matted photographs will be judged but are ineligible for the exhibition. • Dimensions of each entry including the matting must be at least 8” x 10” but not more than 16” x 20”. • The entry form must be clearly visible and affixed securely to the entry’s backing material. • Entries in frames and/or under glass will not be accepted. • Entries signed or otherwise identified on the photograph’s front will be eliminated from consideration. • No more than 3 entries per competitor will be accepted. • Any entry displaying subject matter deemed by the judging panel or the Arts Commission as unsuitable for public display to an audience of all ages shall be rejected for all purposes of the competition.

A private tour of the Harriet Beecher Stowe house is planned for April 13 from 3-4 pm. A tour guide will provide stories about the house and the famous anti-slavery author. She came from the Beecher family, a famous religious family, and is best known for her novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin (1852), which depicts the harsh conditions for enslaved African Americans. The book reached millions as a novel and play, and became influential in the United States and Great Britain, energizing anti-slavery forces in the American North, while provoking widespread anger in the South. Stowe wrote 30 books, including novels, three travel memoirs, and collections of articles and letters. She was influential for both her writings and her public stances and debates on social issues of the day.
In 1832, at the age of 21, Harriet Beecher moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to join her father, who had become the president of Lane Theological Seminary. There, she also joined the Semi-Colon Club, a literary salon and social club whose members included the Beecher sisters, Caroline Lee Hentz, Salmon P. Chase (future governor of the state and Secretary of Treasury under President Lincoln), Emily Blackwell and others.
It was in the literary club that she met Calvin Ellis Stowe, a widower who was a professor at the seminary. The two married on January 6, 1836.[6] He was an ardent critic of slavery, and the Stowes supported the Underground Railroad, temporarily housing several fugitive slaves in their home.
There are no restrictions on taking photos, however, it was noted that most of the artifacts from the Stowe family were taken with them when they moved from Cincinnati. After touring the house we will walk 2 blocks to the German Cemetery to explore the names on the graves and take a few more images.
Parking – there is room for 10 cars at the house (lot east side of house off Foraker Ave.), beyond that there is street parking on Foraker on the south side of the house.
Entrance Fee – $4 if less 9 persons or less attend, $3 if 10 or more persons attend.

BIO: Tom was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1960 and currently resides in Lebanon, Ohio. I graduated with a BED Degree from Miami University school of Fine Art in 1984 and a Master of Architecture Degree from Washington University in 1987.
I have been involved with photography for over 25 years. I believe that photography begins with the act of seeing, it is the art of noticing and seeing the beauty in nature and capturing the moment. Through my photography I strive to create environmental portraits that capture the sense of time and place, an intimate landscape within the immensity of imagination.
