SPEAKER: SUSAN MILINKOVICH

CRITIQUE: ELEMENTS OF SEPARATION
Knowing how to lead the viewer’s eye in and around your image with post-production techniques is powerful. The visual impact of what you change should be realistic and subtle, not over-powering. Using the knowledge that the eye will look first to the brightest area or the most stark, then, after assuring the subject is the brightest or most stark, consider leading the viewer by adjusting the brightness toward the subject. Other elements that can be applied are: contrast, focus/blur and texture – eyes are attracted to detail.

PRESENTATION: IMPROVING YOUR CREATIVITY THROUGH SELF EXPRESSION
“Creative self-expression in art is not about what one may have in common with others. It is about what makes one unique and different from others”. ~Guy Tal

We do not make our best work looking at what others are doing, but rather by following whatever thread of curiosity is ours and ours alone. Creativity gives you the freedom to pursue any subject, create in any style, and do anything that you want. Learn how to tune in to what you connect with in the landscape and how to translate that photographically to visually communicate that experience with others.

SUSAN MILINKOVICH BIO:
Susan Milinkovich began photographing with her father when she got her first Brownie camera in elementary school. Her dad gave her the gift of “seeing” a photograph and both parents gave her a love of nature and an appreciation for the beauty to be found in our everyday world. While Susan enjoys capturing the larger landscapes, it is the intimate details of a landscape, structure or flower that draws her attention. Susan has participated in exhibits at Pop Revolution, Middletown Art Center, the Cincinnati Nature Center and Mohawk Gallery as part of Cincinnati’s PhotoFocus. Susan teaches classes and workshops on composition, light, macro and close-up photography, abstract photography, color theory, still life, and focus stacking.

PROGRAM: TRAVEL
Travel photography has two purposes. The first is to capture the spirit of the place to induce people to go there. The second is to capture the spirit of the place without regard to whether people should come there. The first is the more commercial form you are more likely to see lifestyle shots like restaurants, greeting people, happy kids, loving couples, etc. The second version is much more akin to photojournalism and what do you see in Ukraine right now. In that case the goal is to capture the place as it is and of course as a photographer sees it.

In his presentation we will learn how to distinguish one type from the other type of travel photography, with plenty of examples from his own voyages of discovery
