JANUARY MEETING CRITIQUE: RALPH NORDSTROM / Mastering Landscape Photography

Details

This photograph, titled Free Flowing, is more than a photograph of a waterfall and its reflection. It is flowing through a somewhat treacherous terrain of descending jagged and abrasive rocks. And yet the falls has a simplicity about it, even a pure, naïve quality, indifferent to its unsettling surroundings. Overall, in spite of the conflicting content, this photograph conveys a feeling of safety and comfort.

EDUCATION PROGRAM: MASTERING LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY

Creating photographs that are beautiful and aesthetically pleasing is certainly a desirable achievement. But there’s another level, a deeper level that a photograph can attain. It can be expressive. In addition to showing an objective reality it can reveal a subjective reality. The goal of an expressive photograph is to communicate emotions, thoughts, metaphors, moods with the viewer. A photograph of a waterfall can say more than just ‘this is a waterfall.’ For a photograph to communicate we use what I refer to as a Creative Vocabulary which consists of the tools and techniques that we can bring to bare in the field as well as in the digital darkroom. But in selecting which tools to use we must have an understanding of what impact or effect that will have on our viewers. This presentation provides a taste of this Creative Vocabulary from the viewer’s perspective.

RALPH NORDSTROM, CALIFORNIA BIO:

In 2008, to satisfy may passion for teaching, I started leading photography workshops and now lead workshops in California, Oregon and Utah.

At the start of a journey one never knows where it will take you. For me, being an artist is the compass of my trek. Some years ago, I was invited to teach a weekend photography class for the Joshua Tree National Park Desert Institute. When asked for the title of the class, I boldly answered, “Fine Art Photography in Joshua Tree.” The class that evolved from that audacious start covers the nature of art, the artistic process and how to grow as an artist. About a year ago we decided on a second class with an equally audacious scope – Mastering Landscape Photography. But these two classes have completely transformed my photography. Now my approach to a photograph is not just to share a beautiful landscape but to express what I’m feeling. In an effort to share what I have discovered along the way I am now writing a book based primarily on the Mastering Landscape Photography class but also including elements from the Fine Arts… class.

SO THAT’S IS WHAT YOU ARE GETTING TONIGHT – A LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHER WHO IS INTENT ON CREATING ART AND SHARING WITH YOU WHAT HE HAS FOUND ALONG THE WAY.
