American Sign Museum

Details

OUR CLUB HAS BEEN APPROVED TO BRING OUR SINGLE LENS REFLEX AND MIRRORLESS CAMERAS. BUT OBVIOUSLY NO STUDIO LIGHTING OR MODELS.

Limited to our Event Members, Trial Members and up to 2 Guests.

The American Sign Museum is dedicated to the art and history of signs and sign making. The Museum is proud to be the largest public museum dedicated to signs in the United States! Covering more than 100 years of American sign history in 20,000 square feet of indoor space, the museum is a walk through the ages of sign technologies and designs. Some signs, still in their original shipping crates, remain pristine. Others proudly retain a weathered look. The storefront-laden Signs on Main Street display recreates a typical Main Street Any-Town USA, with shop windows full of sign-related artifacts. Current sign artisans have added to Main Street’s aesthetic by creating “distressed” signs to reflect the time period. See if you can tell which time period the signs fit into! Look for the revolving sign with an actual bullet hole. And don’t miss the Burma Shave sign sequence up above. Enjoy a full-size, reassembled, Mail Pouch barn sign in a room filled with local Cincinnati signs.

Public Tour: Join an ASM staff member for an enjoyable 45-minute look at the collection.

Fee: Adults $15
Seniors (65+) $10

We normally schedule a private tour for OVCC members and will do so if we have enough people.

1ST: PROGRAMWHAT MAKES A WINNING PHOTOGRAPH
Whether we are entering an image into a camera club or photography competition, posting our images on our website or social media page, or just framing our photograph to hang on our wall at home – we want our image to be the best that it can be. But how do we meet that goal? What do we need to pay attention to with our equipment, how do we capture the image in the field, and how do we edit the image in post-processing software? Join us as we explore some key points along the journey to creating winning photographs. We will discuss the questions we need to ask – and answer – when something draws our attention in the field. We will consider the technical skills we can use to frame and capture the subject. Then we will explore how we can take the vision we had in the field for that image and use our editing tools to achieve that vision. By using before and after examples of images, we will learn some tips on how to edit and create that winning photograph.

BREAK

2ND CRITIQUE: “ESSENCE OF LIGHT”
Understanding the color of an object you are photographing is not the actual color of the object but instead the color that is being reflected off the object. Then factoring in daylight itself changes seven times daily and polarizing filters can further affect the quality of light, a photographer can manage the resultant color characteristics they are seeking. Hence the Essence of Light can include interesting shadows, backlighting, side-lighting, “God beams,” starbursts, high or low-key light, the Golden hour or Blue light hour, sunrise, or sunsets, and natural or artificial light. Plan the end color you want to capture ands set out and to it.

BIO: SUSAN MILINKOVICH
Susan Milinkovich began photographing with her father when she got her first Brownie camera in elementary school. Her dad gave her the gift of “seeing” a photograph and both parents gave her a love of nature and an appreciation for the beauty to be found in our everyday world. While Susan enjoys capturing the larger landscapes, it is the intimate details of a landscape, structure or flower that draws her attention. Susan has participated in exhibits at Pop Revolution, Middletown Art Center, the Cincinnati Nature Center and Mohawk Gallery as part of Cincinnati’s PhotoFocus. Susan teaches classes and workshops on a variety of photography topics. Check out more of Susan’s photography at www.susanmilinkovich.com

Historic Platinum/Palladium Printing Demonstration

Details

THIS IS A LIMITED ATTENDANCE (10) EVENT AND IT IS EXPECTED TO SELL OUT. DO NOT REGISTER FOR THIS EVENT UNTIL YOU ARE CERTAIN YOU WILL ATTEND, OR BE CERTAIN TO CANCEL >48 HOURS IN ADVANCE

Place sign in front windshield you are visiting Matt’s Studio if parking next door.

Matt Zory, www.matthewzory.com artisan / Creative and Artistic Photographer, Musician – assistant principal basswith the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, author, “The Remaking of Cincinnati’s Music Hall.”

Matt is driven to explore, create and rediscover. These past several months he has dwelled back into historic photo printing techniqes, specifically Platinum/Palledium Contact Printing. Matt has invited ten members of OVCC to come to Pendleton Arts Center and see his work and demonstration of this printing technique.

Platinum prints, also called platinotypes, are photographic prints made by a monochrome printing process involving platinum. For those who collect photographs, platinum/palladium prints are known for their beauty, archival stability and unique, one-of-a-kind print statement.
The platinum tones range from warm black, to reddish brown, to expanded mid-tone grays that are unobtainable in silver prints.
As with most historical photographic processes, a platinum print is made by placing the negative and emulsion-coated paper in direct contact. Therefore, the size of the photographic print is equal to the size of the negative.

Unlike the silver print process, platinum lies on the paper surface, while silver lies in a gelatin or albumen emulsion that coats the paper. As a result, since no gelatin emulsion is used, the final platinum image is absolutely matte with a deposit of platinum (and/or palladium, its sister element which is also used in most platinum photographs) absorbed slightly into the paper.

Platinum prints are the most durable of all photographic processes. It is estimated that a platinum image, properly made, can last thousands of years. Some of the desirable characteristics of a platinum print include:
• The reflective quality of the print is much more diffuse in nature
compared to glossy prints that typically have specular reflections.
• A very delicate, large tonal range.
• Not being coated with gelatin, the prints do not exhibit the
tendency to curl.
• The darkest possible tones in the prints are lighter than silver-based
prints. Recent studies have attributed this to an optical illusion
produced by the gelatin coating on RC and fiber-based papers.
However, platinotypes that have been waxed or varnished will
produce images that appear to have greater D-max than silver prints.
• A greatly decreased susceptibility to deterioration compared to
silver-based prints due to the inherent stability of the process and
also because they are commonly printed on 100% rag papers.
