Join Pam as she shares some of her favorite locations to photograph in Cincinnati! From river cityscapes to flowers and historical landmarks. Workshop limited to 8.
Pam Decamp is an award-winning fine art photographer who travel the United States and abroad. Decamp lives in southern Ohio; she captures images off the beaten path and give them special attention in post-processing. Images of leaf covered roads, mountain vistas, and whimsically nostalgic scenes inspire her viewer to experience the beauty of our nation. Pam holds a Bachelors Degree from Xavier University (Cincinnati, Ohio) in Film and Photography.
About this event

Pam will share her expertise and knowledge on how to capture the beauty of the skyline at night and how to use a slow shutter speed to capture the fireworks that will fill the sky. She will share composition tips, creative perspectives, and points of view to create the unique images of the city. Editing techniques will be discussed as part of the creative process.

Friday will begin with dinner on the river and then photograph the city skyline at sunset into the blue hour and then fireworks after the Cincinnati Reds baseball game (weather permitting).

Saturday begins with a trip to Cincinnati Union Terminal, a wonderful art deco train station that opened in 1933. Then to Spring Grove Cemetery to export the gardens, landscapes, and gothic crypts in this historic cemetery. The group will venture across town to Eden Park and Krohn Conservatory for an afternoon and evening of macro and landscape photography.

Sunday will finalize the tour with a trip to Music Hall and Findlay Market!
There will be opportunity to share images for critique and suggestions on editing.

Thursday, May 27 6:30 to 7:30 DEBRIEF SESSION Online

Please do not go back into your inventory of bird shots taken at the world’s best locations, rather take new photos over this 1 month period this year.

The meeting will be an open-mic group discussion about the photos captured with the goal of encouraging and helping improve our work.

The second Supermoon in a month will occur on May 26, 2021, which also coincides with a lunar eclipse at 5:45 am. Our location will only see a partial eclipse (you’d have to head way out West to see a total eclipse). We will gather starting at 5:15 am at the Cincinnati overlook in Mt. Adams at the Highland Towers. If you participated in the recent Mt. Adams Photo Walk we ended up at that same location.

Even if the eclipse is not the best it could be you will still obtain a supermoon literally over Downtown, but you’ve go to get up early for it. I will provide coffee and donuts for those that RSVP and confirm they will be there in the comments (so I don’t buy for no-shows).

In the event of bad weather we will not be able to reschedule this event, so stayed tuned for any last minute updates.

RECOMMENDED GEAR:
Bring a wide angle lens to capture downtown and the moon and downtown at the same time. Bring a lens or lenses that will provide a 100-400 mm range if you want to zoom in on the moon itself. A sturdy tripod will be critical as well. If you have a remote release that will be a great time to use one.

PARKING:
This is Mt. Adams and parking will likely be at a premium to find, so arrive early and find the closest spot you can. Consider carpooling using the Comments section below.

According to NASA, a blood moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse, when the Earth is positioned directly between the moon and the sun, hiding the moon from sunlight. It’s named for its red glow.

“When this happens, the only light that reaches the moon’s surface is from the edges of the Earth’s atmosphere,” the space agency explains. “The air molecules from Earth’s atmosphere scatter out most of the blue light. The remaining light reflects onto the moon’s surface with a red glow, making the moon appear red in the night sky.”

NASA says the result will be a “ring of light” around the moon.

“Just how red it will look is hard to predict, but dust in the atmosphere can have an effect. (And keep in mind there have been a couple of prominent volcanic eruptions recently),” NASA said.

Not only does May bring a lunar eclipse, but also the year’s best supermoon. A supermoon occurs when the moon appears larger than usual in the night sky because it is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit, known as perigee.

May’s full supermoon is known as the “Flower Moon,” and it marks the second of three supermoons this year. It’s appropriately named for the abundance of flowers associated with spring in the Northern Hemisphere.

A one- and three-quarter mile walk through historic Over-the-Rhine on the National Register of Historic Places. The city’s largest area of Italianate architecture in the country. We will tour eastern Over-the-Rhine featuring Greek Revival and early Italianate townhomes, one of the oldest and rare federal house from 1834. We will walk along one of the loveliest streets downtown with well kept houses. Then to North Main Street, one of the finest intact late 19th Century streetscapes in the city, known for its independent and artistic spirit. Colorful and interesting. Then to Washington Park, Cincinnati’s second oldest park, a band stand, and mature trees. Next block over is our Music Hall, Cincinnati’s second oldest park, a band stand and mature trees. Back along lower Over-the-Rhine to our starting point.

PARKING: Street parking and S&P two floor well lite parking garage, entrance off Sycamore just north of 13th street, 1322 Sycamore Street.

One of the biggest mental blocks is simply believing, “I’m not a very creative person.” I hear this most often from engineers, accountants, and those in technical fields who have struggled to discover the creative style they desire.

This session breaks down creative barriers in a really fun and logical way! I take an interactive, myth-busters-style approach! You’ll learn how to apply the creative process and develop patterns that will bring more joy, innovation, success, creativity and happiness to your photography! You will learn:

• How even those who feel they “are not artistic” can actually become artistic and creative
• Understand “imaginative skill” and how it develops
• About my “Mash up” formula
• How you can debunk your own myths about artistic and creative ability

All non-photographer guests are required to pay, simply because of the space limitations and Raptor, Inc. policy.

Visit the Raptor, Inc. complex, where their educational birds will be displayed for your photographic pleasure. Birds are perched and hand held by the handlers. Photographers are as close as 10-15 feet from the birds and have lots of time to shoot. Tripods and telephoto lenses of 200-400mm are recommended, however, not necessary. NO FLASH.

You need not me be a member to attend and you may bring a guest, but all attendees, including guests, must pay the fee. All monies are for the benefit of Raptor, Inc. to help them continue their great efforts.

Our topic – THE MOON.
This shoot and debrief will give participants two weeks to take photos of the moon at a local place of your choosing. Please do not go back into your inventory of moon shots taken at the world’s best locations. Please choose somewhere you will be in the next two weeks, be that Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, etc… Feel free to include interesting subjects in the foreground/photo. It does not have to be a full frame photo of the moon, but it can be.

Mount Adams is a small tangle of streets lined with narrow, pristine old houses, all perched on a hill that offers some of the best views of Cincinnati. Mount Adams offers its charms inside of a blanket of pleasant quiet. Historically home to German and Irish immigrants it witnessed a change in the 1950s to hippies, yuppies, empty nesters, and young families. Eden Park contains some of the city’s most visited attractions such as the Cincinnati Art Museum, Playhouse in the Park, and the Krohn Conservatory. Note that Mount Adams is one of the hilliest parts of the city and has earned its nickname as “The San Francisco of the Midwest.”

We will plan to start at a time such that at the end of the walk we will be at a good time and place to catch an optional sunset at 8:37 pm NW of the city, which is only a couple of blocks from the starting location.

WALKING DETAILS: the walking distance is 2.1 miles, although a 1.5 mile alternate path is available. Wear very comfortable shoes as the walk is rated moderate to strenuous, although we will be moving slowly taking photographs.

WALKING MAP: a prepared copy of the photo walking map will be provided in advance by email to all registered walkers, and a number of paper copies will be provided at the start. We will start out promptly at the posted start time, so if you are late you are on your own. Our pace will be leisurely. At points of interest I will stop and mention a few words about that point of interest. Typically the group will spread out over time, and that is OK if you have the map!

MEETING LOCATION: meet on St. Gregory Street (enter 1015 St. Gregory into your GPS to get close). This is at the bottom of the 90 steps going up to the Holy Cross Immaculata Church, our first stop.

SUNSET LOCATION: Near the end of our walk we will stop at the parking lot for the Highland Towers. Since you will likely want a tripod for those sunset photos either carry one with you or park in this area and leave your tripod in the car and walk the 2-3 blocks to the bottom of the steps, which is our meeting location for the start of the tour.

PRE-WALK DINING: take advantage of all Mt. Adams has to offer and have your dinner in advance of the walk (please plan this on your own). There a number of bars & restaurants in the area.
