Group 2 Spring Grove Cemetary

Details

This is our 2nd event here this day and meets at a different time.

Spring Grove was chartered in 1845 and is one of the largest nonprofit cemeteries in the United States, and the most beautiful according to thousands of visitors who come to visit every year. There are 733 acres of which approximately 450 acres are developed. The lakes provide an excellent reflection of the bursting colors.

This is a magnificent picturesque property where photographers, runners and sight seers are welcome showing respect for families visiting their loved ones.

As it is May tree flowers have fallen. You can pick up a large map inside their office (by Parking Lot) which depicts all many sections as well as roadways.

As the cemetery is currently open to the public only Sundays, to respect families, we will break up into three or four car groups for those wanting to follow others familiar with the cemetery.

This event will allow 12 attendees.

Introduction to Texturizing Your Photos

Details

OVCC Member Nancy Germer will present a 90 minute on-line course on how to add texture to your photos in order to elevate the artistic look of them. This is a course for intermediate Photoshop users. You will not need to use Photoshop during the workshop. The presentation will be informational with an informal demonstration.

About Nancy – After spending 30 years in the public teaching field,
Nancy became a member, in several capacities, of OVCC for the last 11 years. She learned photography through participation, meeting friends in OVCC, and asking questions. Many of her Photoshop skills are self- taught. She also enjoys using Corel Painter for more painterly work.
Living in Ohio half of the year, when it gets cold, she migrates to Florida for the other half. She has quite a number of award winning photographs and has had a solo exhibit of her textured art photography. But mostly, she uses photography and Photoshop for her own enjoyment and for relaxation.

  1. This class is for persons who have access to Photoshop and are already familiar with the use of layers. You are, of course, welcome to observe.
  2. The class will be recorded and available for playback after the session in case you missed something or need to review.
  3. Questions should be in synch with the material being presented and not generic “how do I use layers” for which the attendees are already expected to be familiar.
  4. Nancy will provide some practice files after-class.

Astro for Amateurs Play it Again

Details

Astro for Amateurs Shine On Edition

We did this last fall, and it was great fun. Some changes due to COVID-19

New for 2020

No car pooling; max two people in a car, and then only if they live with each other. Otherwise 1 per car.
Masks will be worn
Gloves are recommended
No tripods within 10 feet of each other (easy to follow this one!)

Monday May 18 is supposed to be clear and warm, with the moon well out of the way by the time we start shooting.

I am trying to move the venue about a mile to the farm of the man who invited us to use his place. Otherwise, same place as last year, crossroads of Rt 125 and Blue Creek Road. I’ll let you know if we get the new space (a farm, even darker and no headlights)

You will need: a tripod, a camera with a wide angle lens, and the faster the lens the better. You will also need a remote shutter with a “bulb” setting or a programmed time of you lens’s focal length divided by 450. You’ll also need a headlamp with a red beam. Red headlamps do not affect night vision, especially your neighbor’s!

Ideal lens is between 14-24mm, f3.5 or faster. You’ll also need a headlamp with a red beam. For Nikon shooters, an f24-70 is a great lens for this, as is a 14-24 f2.8. You can set your white balance to “daylight” or to about 3500K or a bit higher.

Obviously, this Meet-Up is weather dependent, and a go-no go decision will be made by 5:00 PM on 5/18. Rain date the next night if possible.

NOTE: The convenience store probably has a restroom. I suggest stopping there on your way to the site. Be prepared.

CHANGE OF DATE
Turbulent weather is killing us. We are re-scheduling for Saturday, May 23, 8:45 PM. That’s iffy on weather, but might work out. The glactic core won’t become visible until 10:57 that night, but we take what we can get.

New Back-Up dates after that: Saturday, 5/30, then June 15. These aren’t arbitrary dates; they’re based on phase and time of moonset, and also take into account when the galactic center is visible, and how far above the horizon it is. (It’s higher even later in the summer).

PRESENTATION
“There are some pretty good reasons why black-and-white has come back from the dead. Eric Hatch’s presentation will explore the differences and advantages of black and white photography vs. full color. And since this is a world of color-based digital cameras, we will learn how to use them to produce great black and white images. We will learn how to use your camera to get the best results, and we will go over techniques for “seeing” in black and white, including using the Zone System to improve your exposures in BOTH color and black and white.
Finally, the educational presentation ends with a look at two practical ways to get better black-and-white conversions of your color originals.”

CRITIQUE
Second Part: Critique Your B and W Images. Submit up to 3 images, at:
Eric is an experienced photo judge and Critiquer. He believes that photo critique should be positive, concrete, actionable, and be keyed to well-known principles of good photography. Concrete means tied to an element of your image. Actionable means you can do something about it — change a setting, re-compose — but no “move the mountain” or “rent a helicopter” advice. Critique should be keyed to well-known principles to keep it from being just a quirky notion or prejudice of the critiquers.

SUBMITING IMAGES FOR OUR CRITIQUE SESSION.
You may submit up to three images IN JPEG format to:

Achievements
• Inducted into the Photoshop Hall of Fame in 2014, and one of only
33 others in the world.
• Included as a Sony Artisan of Imagery.
• Matt has authored or co-authored about 20 print books (between revisions and new titles).
• His “Photoshop Compositing Secrets” book was awarded Amazon Editors Top Books of the year in the Arts & Photography category.

My Approach
While many pros do come to me for training, my main audience is kinda like me – people that simply love photography. People who want easy-to-follow training on how to capture better photos, and how to make those photos look better with Lightroom and Photoshop and ON1 apps to add my “style”.
Most people I talk to aren’t making a ton of money (or any for that matter) from photography or post-processing. They just really enjoy it and want to get better. And heck… if they can sell a few prints or shoot a few events to make some extra cash to support photography… even better!

I have ZERO ego attached to my photography and everything attached to my teaching and education. Because of that, I hold nothing back. No secrets, no insider tips that I keep to myself.
