2019 Vectren Dayton Air Show

LATE PARKING UPDATE (6/18/19)
The 2019 Air Show has implemented our alternate parking plan. All parking will be on paved lots for the 2019 show. Heavy rains have made the field parking normally used by the air show for spectator parking unusable. The show in cooperation with the Dayton International Airport and police agencies has developed an Alternate Parking plan for Saturday and Sunday’s show that will place all spectator vehicles on paved lots.

The former Emery/UPS Freight Facility located on Old Springfield Road north of the airport will be used as the Alternate Parking site. All spectator parking including General Admission, P-Lot and VIP will be directed to the Alternate Parking site. 60 large shuttle buses have been retained to conveniently shuttle spectators to and from the show grounds on an Express route inside the airport perimeter.

BEST AND QUICKEST ROUTE
The quickest way to get to the Alternate Parking Site is to use Exit 32 (Airport Access Road) off I-70. Simply follow the digital signs that will direct guests west on W National Road, north on Dog Leg Road and east on Old Springfield Rd. Guests can also us Exit 64 (Northwoods Boulevard) off I-75 and follow signs but this will be a slower route due to Dixie Highway narrowing to a single-lane which backs up traffic similar to a lane closure on a major highway. Access will also be much quicker for spectators that come early or prior to 10:00 am.
ARRIVE EARLY TO AVOID HEAVY TRAFFIC

Event Description – For those aficionados of all things aircraft this is the premier event in the region. Once again the Dayton Air Show will be two days, pick whether you want to attend Saturday or Sunday, or both. The USAF Thunderbirds will be the marquee show of the event this year.

The Photographer Pit (Venue #1 below) provides exclusive access including near-the-airfield ‘media’ parking and early entrance both days at 7 am to photograph the static aircraft on the tarmac prior to general admittance crowds entering. If you do this be there at 7 am when they unlock the gate near the media parking (since they re-lock it after letting people in).

  • Static Aircraft Tour begins at 7:00 AM and concludes at 9:00 AM

CHANGE IN PLANS – Beyond Boundaries Exhibition OPEN FOR FIVE WEEKS

Steve Barger’s prints, along with those from three other juried photographer’s will be on display beginning this coming Wednesday, June 17th and run through Friday, July 19. This “Beyond Boundaries” exhibition will be at Gallery 708 located at 708 Walnut Street in downtown Cincinnati. There will be reception on Friday June 21 from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. The timing has not workded our for our club members so we are cancelling the reception as one of our meetups. However, we highly encourage our members to give serious consideration to support Steve, a regular Cirtiquer and Educator for our club, and take in the show at some point.

A note from Steve, “I am pleased to announce that my photographic work is on permanent display at Gallery 708, located in downtown Cincinnati, at 708 Walnut Street next to Jeff Ruby’s restaurant.

Gallery 708 displays and sells a diverse selection of local art work, including paintings, metal sculptures, photography, mixed media, and jewelry.

Beginning this Wednesday and running through July 28 the work of four artists will be featured in the Gallery. I will be one of the four featured artists. There will be an artist’s reception this Friday, July 21 from 5 to 8PM.

I would like to extend to you a personal invitation to attend the reception. There is no charge and drinks and snacks will be provided. If you cannot attend the reception, feel free to visit the gallery during the next five weeks to see my featured display. The gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday 12 to 6PM. TOPIC: ABSTRACT, TEXTURES OR LINES. CRITIQUER: TOM CROCE
In an abstract image the subject is usually only a portion of the image or idea. Viewers likely will only know the essence of the subject by what is implied. An abstract image draws a viewer inward by the interest, uniqueness or beauty of the image.
Pattern photography uses repeating elements – shapes, tones, lines or color.
A strong way to improve composition is through the use of lines. Also lines lead the viewer through the image. By affecting mood, lines add emotional content to images.

TOM CROCE BIO
Tom Croce is originally from Cleveland, Ohio and currently reside in South Western, Ohio. He received his B. Ed. Degree from Miami University School of Fine Art in 1984, and in 1987 earned his Master of Architecture Degree from Washington University. Tom believes that photography begins with the act of seeing, it is the art of noticing and seeing the beauty in nature and capturing that moment. “Through my photography I reach deep inside myself and strive to create environmental portraits that evoke a sense of time and place, that will touch another, inspiring a love and desire to protect the beauty of our natural environment.”

Cincinnati Reds Fireworks

Let’s photograph the last Friday Night Reds Fireworks from General James Taylor Park in Newport, Kentucky and then post our photos. Generally the fireworks start about 15 minutes after the end of the game, which can be between 2.5-3 hours after the start at 7:10 pm (so that puts the fireworks about 10:30 pm. However, you will want to get there early enough to pick out your spot and grab a parking spot.

Parking: you can try to get free parking in the General Taylor lot at the end beyond the riverboats. You can park on West 3rd Street just outside of the levee and walk up and over the levee to the park in a couple of minutes – this allows for a quick egress after the fireworks are over.

Concours d’Elegance 42nd Annual Show

The 42nd annual Cincinnati Concours d’Elegance in Cincinnati’s historic Ault Park features 200 of the most spectacular vehicles of all time and this year the featured theme is “Mid-Century Modern: American Style, 1948-1965.” Special displays will include “MG – 95 Years,” “100th Anniversary of Bentley,” “Asian Tuners,” and “Survivors.” The show also includes 13 classes of classic, vintage, and exotic cars and motorcycles, the Will Sherman Automotive Art Show, Craft Beer Garden (requires ticket purchase at the gate), Brunch at the Pavilion (separate advance ticket purchase required) and new cars on display.

You must exchange your digital or print-yourself ticket at the ticket booth for an entry wristband.

Advanced discounted car show tickets must be purchased by Sunday, May 26, 2019. Full-price adult tickets may be purchased for $30.00 online through Sunday morning, June 9.

Tickets are also available at the gate on Day of Show: $30.00 (adult); $15.00 (student with school ID); children 12 & under – free with adult. The ticket booth at Ault Park opens at 9:30 a.m.; gates open at 10:00 a.m.

Public parking at Ault Park is extremely limited. Please utilize free remote parking & shuttle service at Fifth Third Bank George A. Minimalism Exhibit Opening Reception

Minimalist art allows its viewer to experience more profoundly, the pure qualities of form, color, space, and materials. Sculptors reduce artworks to their essential structure. Photographers consider less is more.
Minimalism is the theme of this exhibit. Artists in this exhibit consider how objects are situated within the fields they occupy, how the elements within their work are vital to the piece, and how they embrace an isolationist approach.

Columbia-Tusculum: San Francisco on the Ohio Photo Walk

Details

Join the OVCC for a 2.5 mile photo walk of the Columbia-Tusculum neighborhood located east of Cincinnati (near the Precinct restaurant). Founded as Columbia near the Little Miami River in 1788, it was established just one month before Cincinnati. The community owes its compound name to the subdivision of Nicholas Longworth’s property in 1866. His heirs created a large subdivision on the steepest part of the hillside and called it Mount Tusculum. This picturesque neighborhood is known for clusters of colorful Victorian-era homes decorated as the Painted Ladies. The most significant sections are located in a local historic district, which allows the city to perform design reviews for any proposed exterior work, and discourage demolition. There are 17 homes on the National Register of Historic places in the area.

In the event of VERY inclement weather the event will be rescheduled with an email notice to all members who RSVPd.

There are restaurants nearby and we will plan on lunching at the end of the tour around noon. Please indicate in the Comments section below if you are staying for lunch so I can get an accurate headcount.

Parking: we will park and meet at Rakestraw Memorial Softball Field (see graphic, located across from 228 Stanley Ave). The tour will begin at 10 am SHARP – which is to say if you are late you are on your own! A walking map will be provided at the start.

What to Bring: it’s a hike with some elevation involved so be prepared for some stairs and paved hill climbing on roads. Bring good walking shoes, weather appropriate clothing, and drinking water. We will pace ourselves for the group. You might want to consider bringing a wide angle lens (to capture the houses) and a 200mm lens (for details).

Lunch: will be at Allyn’s Cafe, 3538 Columbia Pkwy, just a couple of blocks from the parking. We are shooting for 11:45 am – noon for lunch.

Photo Tour of Great American Ball Park and Reds Hall of Fame

The guided photographic tour begins in Great American Ball Park where you will have the opportunity to shoot (among other things) the press box, Fan Zone, Diamond Club, and the dugouts. After 90 minutes in the stadium the group will enter the newly remodeled Reds Hall of Fame and Museum for a 60 minute visit.

Cost of the tour is $14 per person CASH payable at the event. If possible please arrive with exact change.

After the photoshoot feel free to join the festivities of Taste of Cincinnati taking place on 5th Street in the heart of downtown Cincinnati.

Parking should not be a problem since the tour begins at 10am, while Taste does not start until 11am. Park either at Great American Ball Park itself or at the Banks Garages next to the stadium. (There will be a charge for parking in these locations.)

Raptor Shoot

Details

Visit the Raptor, Inc. complex, where their educational birds will be displayed for your photographic pleasure. Birds are perched and hand held by the handlers. Photographers are as close as 10-15 feet from the birds and have lots of time to shoot. Tripods and telephoto lenses of 200-300mm are recommended, however, not necessary.

All the Raptor Shoots have been scheduled for this year. We have decreased from 8 per year to 4 per year due to falling attendance over the last couple of years. If you want to participate in this event, you should get your spot sooner than later to guarantee a spot. If there is renewed interest in this event, I will contact the Raptor folks and ask for additional events, but we would like to make sure the ones we have scheduled get filled.

You need not me be a member to attend and you may bring a guest, but all attendees, including guests, must pay the fee. All monies are for the benefit of Raptor, Inc. to help them continue their great efforts.
